Dealing with PTSD, Anxiety, and Depression During Life Transitions

By Jennifer Grossman

At some point in all of our lives we will encounter life transitions. Sometimes we will face multiple life transitions at once and some of these life transitions may be unexpected. Regardless of what type of life transition you may be encountering, it is possible that you may experience mental health symptoms that may be new to you or previous mental health symptoms that were at one point managed. This can happen even during a positive life transition such as having a baby or starting a new job.

PTSD During Life Transitions

There may have been a time in your life where you experienced a traumatic event that caused you to be diagnosed with PTSD. During a life transition, you may experience some PTSD symptoms such as flashbacks of a traumatic event or nightmares as the life transition you are encountering may bring up memories of the traumatic event you previously experienced.

You may also feel like your life is missing structure during this time and there may be a lot of uncertainty during this time of transition. Some things you can try in order to stay grounded during this time is to try to implement your own routine such as making sure you are getting enough sleep, avoid alcohol or drugs, spend time with people who you are comfortable with and who are supportive, and try to utilize some calming strategies such as going for a walk.

Anxiety During Life Transitions

Life transitions can also bring on anxiety. You may have a history of anxiety or this may be a new experience for you. You may find yourself feeling worried about the uncertainty a life transition brings on. You may also have ruminating thoughts that are difficult to control.

You may be finding yourself overwhelmed with all of the changes brought on by the life transition. Some ways you can try to manage anxiety during a life transition is to try breathing exercises, break down tasks into smaller parts so you do not feel as overwhelmed, go for a walk, and utilize support systems.

Depression During Life Transitions

Managing feelings of depression during a life transition can be challenging and feel overwhelming. You may experience feeling unmotivated and have low energy. You may also be trying to balance navigating this new transition while having feelings of sadness. During this time it can be helpful to lean on support systems and to take things one step at a time.
